With a record volume of over 3.35 billion packages in 2017, additional growth up to 5.5% for 2018*, a sharp increase in customer requirements, and the great demands of Industry 4.0—package logistics faces big challenges. This is particularly true for the in-house sorting processes within logistics centers.

 Intelligent end-to-end solution

VITRONIC has expanded its product range to include the end-to-end solution, VIPAC SMALLS SORT. For CEP customers, this means a single partner or, as the LogiMAT motto goes, “First-Hand Package Logistics.” That is because VIPAC SMALLS SORT is an intelligent, modular sorting system that captures shipment data AND automatically sorts small shipments.

 Sorting

The system can be used as a stand-alone solution in small hubs and depots or be integrated in a large-hub sorting process. Each shipment passes through the infeed, encoding, outfeed, and sorting sections and is automatically discharged from the system at the desired point. Special software controls all processes and visualizes the data in real time. VIPAC SMALLS SORT is configured to meet the exact requirements of the customer and is even suitable for very small and odd-shaped packages (for example, cross border, e-commerce shipments).

Data capture

In the encoding section, VITRONIC Auto-ID systems identify all shipment data. In addition to high-resolution images, the length, width, height, and weight of the shipments are captured. The systems read and process barcodes, 2D codes, and plain text (OCR) to create a "digital fingerprint" of each shipment. All data is automatically saved in the archiving system and provides valuable information that can accelerate processes in distribution centers and reduce costs in the age of Industry 4.0.
